J.S.Zeiter sets the tone for new Japanese label Ryoko on the imprint’s debut drop, the hand-stamped vinyl Ryoko 01. As has so often been the case across the producer’s long and distinguished career, Zeiter delivers two expertly-crafted dub techno jams here in the form of ‘Radium’ and ‘Silver’.
These are tracks which deliver the kind of quietly evocative dancefloor thrills which keep so many returning to dub techno over and over again. ‘Radium’ and ‘Silver’ both top ten minutes and take up a side of wax each, the lengthy runtimes allowing you to become completely immersed in their hypnotic, undulating pulses. As four-to-the-floor kicks knock gently away as an anchor to the rest of the mix, Zeiter draws the listener in with a melange of spiralised sounds - delay-drenched chords, droning keyboard pads, twittering hi-hats - that are made even more potent by the dub scientifics which shroud each track in a thick haze. By following the principles laid down by genre forebears like Basic Channel/Rhythm & Sound, Zeiter has managed to tap into the contemplative beauty at the heart of the dub techno style.
Japanese label Ryoko launches with a pair of masterful dub techno joints from J.S.Zeiter, presented here on a hand-stamped 10” vinyl.
