Ricardo Villalobos’ latest Rawax Records drop AsloHop finds the minimal techno master on fine form. The pair of tunes here come from the quirkier side of the Villalobos style, the crisp crunch of their drums flecked with all sorts of strange sounds. AsloHop’s title-track is jerkily danceable in a delightfully off-kilter manner, its rubbery bass and buoyant synth squiggles combining to excellent effect. Something similar happens on B-side ‘Detrand’, though the track also has a more lively flavour which places it somewhere between the realms of Drexciya and Nicolas Jaar. The AsloHop EP is proof that Villalobos can still find new ways to delight with his signature sound even after all these years in the game.
